    "We Seek What We Find - We See What We Look For": Looking for Literary Production in Washington, D.C. 1921-1928

    Though acknowledged as the intellectual and cultural hub of African American enlightenment, many artists' experiences attest that the reputation of Harlem as an artistic haven has in many ways, been overestimated. The promotion of Harlem's dominant characteristics has led many historians to overlook other culturally productive locations like Washington, D.C., which was also a major center for literary and artistic development during the twenties. My project explores Georgia Douglass Johnson as D.C.'s agent of cultural and literary production through her hostess-ship of Saturday-night literary salons held in her 1461 S. Street Northwest D.C home from 1921-1928. The discussion of this literary salon is original because it includes theories of cultural production and cultural studies submerged within a traditional literary context. Allowing room to cross interdisciplinary lines, this paper involves an investigation of members of the salons as well as the internal and external dynamics of the literary community itself

    Inhibitory cognitive control allows automated advice to improve accuracy while minimizing misuse

    Humans increasingly use automated decision aids. However, environmental uncertainty means that automated advice can be incorrect, creating the potential for humans to action incorrect advice or to disregard correct advice. We present a quantitative model of the cognitive process by which humans use automation when deciding whether aircraft would violate minimum separation. The model closely fitted the performance of twenty-four participants, whom each made 2400 conflict detection decisions (conflict vs non-conflict), either manually (with no assistance) or with the assistance of 90% reliable automation. When the decision aid was correct, conflict detection accuracy improved, but when the decision aid was incorrect, accuracy and response time were impaired. The model indicated that participants integrated advice into their decision process by inhibiting evidence accumulation toward the task response incongruent with that advice, thereby ensuring that decisions could not be made solely on automated advice without first sampling information from the task environment

    Improving the robustness and efficiency of covariate-adjusted linear instrumental variable estimators

    Two‐stage least squares estimators and variants thereof are widely used to infer the effect of an exposure on an outcome using instrumental variables (IVs). Two‐stage least squares estimators enjoy greater robustness to model misspecification than other two‐stage estimators but can be inefficient when the exposure is non‐linearly related to the IV (or covariates). Locally efficient double‐robust estimators overcome this concern. These make use of a possibly non‐linear model for the exposure to increase efficiency but remain consistent when that model is misspecified, so long as either a model for the IV or for the outcome model is correctly specified. However, their finite sample performance can be poor when the models for the IV, exposure, and/or outcome are misspecified. We therefore develop double‐robust procedures with improved efficiency and robustness properties under misspecification of some or even all working models. Simulation studies and a data analysis demonstrate remarkable improvements

    Interferon lambda 4 impacts the genetic diversity of hepatitis C virus

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a highly variable pathogen that frequently establishes chronic infection. This genetic variability is affected by the adaptive immune response but the contribution of other host factors is unclear. Here, we examined the role played by interferon lambda-4 (IFN-λ4) on HCV diversity; IFN-λ4 plays a crucial role in spontaneous clearance or establishment of chronicity following acute infection. We performed viral genome-wide association studies using human and viral data from 485 patients of white ancestry infected with HCV genotype 3a. We demonstrate that combinations of host genetic variants, which determine IFN-λ4 protein production and activity, influence amino acid variation across the viral polyprotein - not restricted to specific viral proteins or HLA restricted epitopes - and modulate viral load. We also observed an association with viral di-nucleotide proportions. These results support a direct role for IFN-λ4 in exerting selective pressure across the viral genome, possibly by a novel mechanism
